Welcome to the British Society for Cell Biology website

The BSCB was founded 1965 to promote the advancement of research in all branches of cell biology in the UK and Ireland. The Society organises a large annual conference each Spring and supports a number of other cell biology meetings across the UK. It helps promote the career development of young cell biologists and provides both travel funds for young researchers and summer research bursaries to undergraduates to work in BSCB member’s labs. The Society awards the Hooke Medal each year to a UK-based cell biologist who has made outstanding contributions to their field and since 2015 a medal to recognise outstanding female early career cell biologists. As of 2021, The Society now recognises up-and-coming young cell biologists with our new PhD and postdoc medals. The BSCB runs annual competitions for cell biology imagery and science writing and plays an increasing role in raising awareness of science policy and funding issues in the UK.

The Society is supported by membership subscriptions and by a generous grant from The Company of Biologists, the publishers of the Journal of Cell ScienceDevelopmentJournal of Experimental Biology and Disease Models and Mechanisms.
