Honor Fell / Company of Biologists Travel Awards

Honor Fell Travel Awards are sponsored by The Company of Biologists (the publishers of The Journal of Cell Science and Development) and they provide financial support for BSCB members at the beginning of their research careers to attend meetings and courses. Applications are considered for any meeting or course relevant to cell biology. The value of the award depends on the location of the meeting or course. Awards will be up to:

  • £150 to attend online events and workshops.
  • £500 for meetings and courses within the UK (including the BSCB Spring meeting)
  • £700 for meetings and courses within Europe.
  • £1000 for meetings and courses in the rest of the world

Awards can be used to cover travel (standard class), accommodation and registration fees. Awards do no not cover subsistence and entertainment expenses.

Please note, applicants can apply for only one conference in the same year, and six in toto.  However, BSCB members may apply for funds for both an online and in-person conference in the same calendar year (these together will count as 1 travel award only). BSCB members can also apply for one conference in addition to the BSCB spring meeting.

How to apply:

1) Register with the BSCB online application portal here (if you haven’t done so already)
2) Download the full application form here, complete and save as a single pdf.
3) Complete your details in the online application portal and upload the full application form.

Eligibility:

  • Awards are normally given to those in the early stages of their careers (students and postdocs). Applications from technical staff are welcome. Group leaders who have no current funding available for travel are eligible for The Company of Biologists Support Grants.
  • Direct debit members must have been a member for at least 3 months before they are eligible to apply for the award.
  • Non-direct debit members must have been a member for at least a year (or be a PhD student in their first year of study). Non-direct debit student members must sign up for 3-4 years in order to be eligible for travel awards.
  • Applications must be made at least six weeks in advance of the meeting for which support is requested.
  • The applicant must have applied to present a poster or a talk. The abstract must be included within the Travel Award application form.
  • Any one lab may receive up to three awards per calendar year, not counting awards to participate in the spring BSCB meeting.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • When presenting a poster or talk, an acknowledgement should be displayed, which can be downloaded (jpg below or pdf here.)
  • Awards for the BSCB Spring meeting are made on a first-come basis and will be limited to the first 30 applicants.

Awards are discretionary and subject to available funds. Decisions on applications are usually made at the end of each calendar month. No payments will be made without supporting receipts.
