Image Competition 2025

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2025 BSCB Image Competition:

1st Prize: Alvaro Castano, Francis Crick Institute

Brainbow

Fluorescently labelled neurons in the adult mouse gut, where each colour labels an individual type of neuron and its projections, giving each a unique signature. The connections between them, the ganglia, can be found at the junction of these tracts. Collectively this network of cells forms the enteric nervous system.

2nd prize: Alan Prescott, University of Dundee

Sphagnum moss leaves

Laser Scanning Confocal z-series of Sphagnum moss leaves presented as a colour-coded projection by depth to emphasise the large retort cells that allow the leaves to retain 20 times their dry weight in water. Sphagnum moss decays slowly to produce peat bogs, important habitats worldwide and a significant carbon store.

3rd prize: Katy Grobicki, University of Bristol

Drosophila spermatogenesis

Confocal images of late stages of Drosophila spermatogenesis. Bundles of 64 spermatids (nuclei in magenta) are individualised by actin-rich investment cones (F-actin in cyan).
